This was Kampong Bengali, two rows of raised attap house which was sited at the area behind where Damo clinic is now. In the fifties we use to rent two units (big family lah!) at Rm20.00 per house. It does not come with electricity and the whole kampong shares a public pipe. Each house runs a rubber hose from the public standpipe to their own unit and each family take turns to fill up their tanks. Sometimes it is till the wee hours of the morning. How lucky you buggers are now.
I can't pinpoint exactly which house is ours but it should be towards the last 6 houses. There is no paved road but gravel laid. Used to run barefoot along it and we know exactly where each stone is so that we won't trip. Believe it or not!!. The roof is attap and floors are uneven planks. Use to sleep on a mat on the raised floor, no tilam leh! Heavy rain, it leaks, strong wind raises the attap up and we can see the sky. Centipedes dropping from above is quite common. We use only kerosene lamp, however, we have a bright" tai kong tang" - a pressurized lamp using kerosene with a treated cloth "bulb". Butterfly brand it is. The lamp will be turned off just before we go to sleep.

Bengali kampong is really own by a "Bai", and a loaf of white bread cost 25 sen, a double loaf cost 45 sen. We use to rear ducks and chicken, thats where the egg comes from (got it?). Goto get up very early to collect the eggs otherwise the crows will beat u to it. I would always shout something like this " di di di di di" to call the ducks back to the penfold. Surprisingly it always work and you would see them walking in a single file back to the fenced pen area. My, I could go on and on about life but will save it for later postings.

wow. my uncle has gotten the blogging bug.

anyway, as a blogger to another, i would like to give u some pointers.

a. comments are more appriciated when it is a 'pop up' that way, readers are able to read the blog post at the same time, post a comment. currently you redirect your comments to a new page, thus readers would have to click the 'back' button to re-read the post.

word verification can be annoying at times, but if you would want another way to stop rediculous comment spams, you can also opt for the comments to be screeened by you instead of a word verification.

b. you can have a chatbox. this is very useful of you would want your readers to have a quick 'hi' instead of posting into the comments section of the blog.

In my opinion, comments are left for a specified blog post while a chat box would be more general and it spurs interaction between readers and blog authour

c. i guess this blog is not stereotype blog, but it is always easier to have the authour profile and blog archive above the pictures. this makes the page loads faster and for the readers to know who is the actual blog authour.

d. you can also have a link out page. this is where u can link to other pages via your own blog. this also allow more traffic and more views on your blog.

e. go to other blogs to see how is their layout. do not be afraid to change the layout once you feel bored of the current one. however, do not rip them off and instead give them due credit to the real blog designer =)

however, before you start your blogskin editing, please do a backup. and dont have to worry about your blog post, all posts are saved and changing the skin would not effect the posts.

hope i am not giving a speech, blogging is not easy as it would require alot of input to what is there to post, not to mention, we must always be open to criticism.

click around the blog desktop and you can learn alot.

welcome to the world of blogging =)
